happy monday, my tender poets! this week’s poem is by Warsan Shire, author of BLESS THE DAUGHTER RAISED BY A VOICE IN HER HEAD. i’ve been enthralled by her writing since the first time i had the pleasure to read one of her poems, and as time goes by, i am even more impressed by her level of skill, execution of form, and depth of storytelling.
a song to add to ur rotation
i was supposed to see Paramore tonight, but due to an illness on their team, i’m left to think about the lost voice that could’ve been. concerts are my church, and Paramore concerts feel holy to me, so after a five-year hiatus, i was ready to sing my favorite songs again.
and because of a prescheduled conflict (another concert), i won’t be able to make their rescheduled date in my city. so in the spirit of processing something that has bummed me out, i want to recommend a song from their new album.
their song Crave speaks to the part of me who is trying to heal my inner child. i still romanticize the sadness from my youth, and i don’t always mean to do so. i’m finally at a point in my healing where i am finding the moments of joy that existed in all the in-betweens. here’s my favorite verse:
try it out! this song feels very indie pop/indie rock with similar decade-hopping vibes that we got from their album After Laughter. it’s one of the most healing songs that i’ve been blessed to hear this year. listen here:
happy monday, and happy reading/listening!
